Important Information About Dismissal and Transportation Changes:

We understand that sometimes plans change for transportation. However, for safety reasons, your child will be sent home every day according to what you wrote on the student information sheet at Supplies Drop Off. Due to school and district policy, there will be no exceptions. If you need to change your child's transportation for the day, please call the office to make us aware of the change as soon as possible. Because I am unable to check my email most days until after 4:00 pm, please call the office with all transportation changes rather than emailing. When possible, please try to avoid picking your child up early from school, as they will miss valuable learning time in math and will likely have work that they will likely need to make up at home.  Thank you!

Homework and Thursday Folders:

Your child has two folders that will move between school and home. The blue and white Thursday folders will be sent home on Thursdays and are due back empty on Fridays. This folder will contain all of your child's completed/graded work as well as important information from the office and myself. Please help your child empty the folder on Thursday evening and share with you what's inside. Their blue homework folder will be sent home daily and will need to travel back and forth between school and home every day. There will be 2 weekly readers sent home on Monday and weekly homework assignments will be communicated in the class newsletter emailed to you by Monday morning each week. For your child's success as a first grade learner, it is important that your child do the reading log activities with a parent each night. In addition, please have your child complete the weekly math assignments and tear them out, staple them with their reading log, and put them in their blue Homework folder by Thursday night.  Your child will turn in his/her own homework as soon as he/she arrives Friday morning, so please make sure that it is in the blue folder and it arrives to school already stapled.  Thank you for helping with this!

Snacks:

Please send your child to school with one healthy peanut and tree nut free snack and non-spill (flip top) water bottle in his/her backpack (not in his/her lunch box). This snack will be to fuel our brains during learning in the morning, so please send a healthy snack that is easy to eat.  Please avoid sending yogurt or applesauce, etc. because this cannot be eaten while working.  Some suggestions include: granola bars, string cheese, fruit, vegetables, or crackers. Due to allergies I am unfortunately not able to supply snacks, so please ensure that your child brings a snack daily.  First graders are typically very hungry by snack time. Thank you!

Birthdays:

We love celebrating birthdays and you are welcome to send in treats for your child's birthday! I ask that all treats peanut and tree nut free and are individual portions.  Treats such as cookies, brownies, or donuts work best. Please avoid sending cupcakes, as these are difficult to pass out quickly and can be difficult to clean up.  Please send enough for 24 kids and napkins, as these are not supplied by the school.  Birthdays are usually celebrated at the end of the day (3:30), but this may vary according to instructional plans for the day.  Parents are always welcome to attend, but please know that the celebration can only last 10 minutes.  I really appreciate it if you email me in advance to let me know what you will be bringing (for allergy reasons) and if you would like to attend.  Party invitations can be handed out at school if there is an invitation for every child in the class, and they will be sent home in Thursday folders. If you would like to send out invitations to part of the class, please to refer to the PTO directory. According to school policy, I am unable to give out parent contact information, so if you need access to this information and would like your child to be included, please sign up for the PTO Directory.  Thank you!

Donations:

Donations are always welcomed and appreciated. If you would like to donate items, helpful supply donations include Crayola colored pencils and Crayola Twistables for our writing station.  Gently used or new books for our class library are always appreciated as well.   One of the best ways you can support our class is by ordering books for your child on the monthly Scholastic orders.  When you order, our classroom earns points to add books to our classroom library.  I also keep a wish list of books needed on Scholastic and Amazon. Thank you so much for your support!

Communication:

Our main communication tool is a weekly classroom newsletter which will be emailed weekly by Monday morning. Please let me know if you do not have internet access and need a hard copy sent home.  Feel free to email me at any time, but please allow at least 24 hours for a response. If you would like to talk over the phone or in person, please email me at vcross@dcsdk12.org or call the office and leave a message and we can schedule a time to talk.  I return all emails as soon as possible, but please know that I am not typically unable to answer emails during the school day, as my focus during class time is teaching students.  I also don't typically answer emails after business hours (8-4 M-F), so if you email me in the evening, I will probably reply the next day.  Thanks in advance for your understanding!
